What Is a QR Code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that smartphones can read in under a second. Unlike a standard barcode that holds only numeric data in one dimension, a QR code encodes data in both horizontal and vertical directions — making it capable of storing URLs, contact information, Wi-Fi credentials, or phone numbers.

When a user points their phone camera at a QR code, the device decodes the embedded data and prompts a relevant action — like opening a website, saving a contact, or dialing a phone number.

How Phone QR Codes Work

A phone number QR code uses the tel: URI scheme. When scanned, it opens the device's native dialer with your number pre-filled. The user simply taps "Call." No typing, no copy-paste errors.

For example, scanning a QR code containing tel:+12125551234 will prompt the phone to call (212) 555-1234.

Dial vs. vCard QR Codes

Simple Dial: Encodes only a tel: link. Scanned → dialer opens → one tap to call. Smallest, most compatible.

vCard Contact: Encodes a full vCard 3.0 record with name, phone, email, and company. When scanned, the user is prompted to save the full contact — perfect when you want people to save your info, not just dial once.

QR Code Best Practices

Size & Placement

  • Minimum print size: 1 inch × 1 inch (2.5cm × 2.5cm) for reliable scanning at arm's length.
  • Business card: 0.75–1 inch works well since the card is held close to the phone.
  • Poster or banner: Scale up — a 3ft banner QR should be at least 3–4 inches square.
  • Quiet zone: Always leave white margin around the QR — at least 4 modules (the small squares) on each side.

Color & Contrast

  • Dark modules on light background is the reliable standard. Inverted (light on dark) can work but reduces compatibility with older readers.
  • Avoid low contrast — the darker the foreground and lighter the background, the better.
  • Colored QR codes work if contrast ratio is at least 4:1.

Error Correction

QR codes include built-in redundancy. This generator uses Medium (M) error correction, which allows up to 15% of the code to be damaged or obscured while still scanning successfully. This is ideal for adding logos or slight design overlays.

Test Before You Print

Always scan your QR code with at least two different devices (iOS and Android) before committing to a print run. Verify the correct phone number is dialed each time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The QR code preview is generated instantly and completely free with no account required. The high-resolution PNG and SVG downloads are unlocked by entering your email address — that's all.

Never. These are static QR codes — all data is encoded directly in the image. There is no server, no short URL, and no subscription required. Your QR code will work as long as the phone number is active.

Use international format with the country code for maximum compatibility: +1 (212) 555-1234 or +12125551234. The generator automatically strips spaces, dashes, and parentheses when building the QR data. For US numbers, the +1 prefix is added automatically if omitted.

PNG is a 1024×1024 pixel raster image — ideal for digital use, web embedding, and most print applications up to about 3×3 inches. SVG is a vector format that scales to any size without loss of quality, making it perfect for large-format print like banners, signage, and merchandise.

Yes. vCard 3.0 format is universally supported on both iOS and Android. When scanned, iOS opens the contact preview in the native Contacts app; Android behaves similarly. The user can review the contact and tap Save to add it to their phone book.

This tool generates clean, universally scannable QR codes. To overlay a logo, download the SVG file and use a vector editor like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape — place your logo in the center quiet zone and keep it to no more than 15% of the total QR area to preserve scanability.

QR code generation is 100% client-side — your phone number and contact details never leave your browser. When you enter your email to unlock downloads, it is sent to our secure backend solely to deliver access, in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
